When considering the options available for an international secondment, Dubai was a location which stood out to me the most. Dubai is the head office for DLA Piper in the Middle East and having the opportunity to experience working and living in such a vibrant and diverse city was one which I had to make sure I applied for.
Even though I had not visited Dubai before I felt like I settled in very quickly. The corporate team and the office generally have been great in helping with any questions I had and everyone I have met has been very friendly. So far I have worked on cross border M&A, group reorganisations, corporate governance and onshore law; with the latter giving me the opportunity to visit the Dubai Economic Development Authority. Having to adapt to the ways of working of another jurisdiction has been a challenge but one which contributes so much to your development and journey in becoming a lawyer.
There is always something to do in Dubai and I have had the chance to visit many attractions including City Walk, the Dubai Mall, Aquaventure water park, the Marina and La Mer to name a few. I have also visited the Grand Mosque and Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. The best part about the location of our office and accommodation is that I get to walk past the Burj Khalifa and the famous dancing fountains every day. You are probably thinking this may get boring after a while but I am three months in and still marvel at the specimen that is the Burj Khalifa.
My first three months in this Emirate have been amazing and I am very excited and look forward to enjoying my final three months out here.
